This Gazetteer, divided into 4 volumes, covers the Army Map Service 1:25,000 scale maps for the Cold War era countries of East and West Germany. Be aware that assorted place names may be found in any of the 4 volumes, depending upon their placement within the 2 Germanys. Place names within these gazetteers are locatable online by the following process:

With one or more places in mind, search the gazetteer by clicking on one of the links under “View the Book” found at the top left. Once you find a place of interest, there are 2 adjoining columns you’ll want to take note of: Designation and Sheet Number. Designation tells you whether you are looking at a populated place, a mountain, a farm etc. A full list of these abbreviations is found in the front of each volume. The sheet number tells you the map sheet that the place is found within. Once you have the correct place name, designation, and sheet number, return to the Internet Archive record and click on the link to BYU’s Germany Map page. Once the page is displayed, enter the sheet number into the search box to display the map. Maneuver around the map and zoom in and out, until you find the place you are interested in.
